Newcastle Beach Clean
May 4th 8 - 9am
Calling all people who love to swim in the ocean, like clean drinking water, care about the future and enjoy seeing healthy marine life.
Join us for our monthly beach clean!
More Than 8 million Tonnes of Plastic Enter the Oceans Every Year.
Roughly 40% of the ocean’s surface is now covered in plastic debris and if our plastic consumption continues,
it is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
One of the most shocking plastic pollution in the ocean facts is that the ocean plastic pollution is on track to triple over the next 40 years.
We work with Tangaroa Blue Foundation an Australia-wide not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris.
How it works
First we clean the beach for 1 hour
First we clean the beach and collect ANYTHING that shouldn’t be there. From large items such as broken surfboards and beach tents to small plastics that can easily be hidden in the sand.
Second we record the data
We sort the rubbish and count the data recording it on the data sheet provided by Tangaroa Blue. Then we put the rubbish where it belongs in the bin.
Later that day Brooke enters the data
The database is used to firstly identify what is impacting different sections of the coast, and then to track wherever possible where those items are coming from.
Finally
Stakeholders from Tangaroa Blue are brought together to work on practical solutions and create source reduction plans to stop marine debris from entering our oceans in the first place
What to bring
We have all of the cleaning gear including - gloves, bags and hand sanitiser
